Orioles Sign…Jake Bray, RHP

	The Orioles went 100 K over slot to sign this hard throwing right hander in the 12th Round. He’s originally from Spanish Springs high school in Reno, Nevada. He is a talented athlete, having starred as a two way player (3B/Closer) at Feather River, and actually led the Golden Valley conference with a .368 AVG this Spring. His future lies on the mound though as the Orioles drafted him as a pitcher. With a fastball that touches mid 90’s and a promising slider, I don’t need to argue why.

Scouting Report

Primer: (20 = Terrible, 30 = Well Below Average, 40= Mediocre, 50= Major League Average, 60= Above Average 70= Plus/All-Star Caliber, 80= Plus-Plus/Elite/Superb

• Fastball: 50/60 – 92-94 MPH; Tops out at 96
• Slider: 45/55 – Reports I’ve read suggest good feel for slider; potential above average offering
• Changeup: 40/50 –

(Not much scouting info available on Bray; I’ll have to update this at a later time when I get a chance to speak with a scout or coach about him)

Overall outlook: Bray is a fresh arm without much experience on the mound. He didn’t throw many innings this Spring, making it tough for scouts to get a good evaluation of him. It’s quite possible had he focused only on pitching, he could’ve gone much higher so kudos to the Orioles scout that recommended him. He’s likely a relief prospect but it’s possible, given his athleticism and some ‘now-stuff’ already, that with a lot of work, he could be brought along as a starter. Regardless, this is an intriguing arm to follow; more of a sleeper at the moment than a prospect but he has the raw ability to establish himself as a prospect in the years to come. For what it’s worth, Baseball America had Bray listed at number 288 on their Top 500 Draft prospects list and the Orioles were able to get him at pick number 369.

(Former) Orioles Prospect Comparison: David Hernandez – Not saying he’ll be a major leaguer like Hernandez just yet but the profile seems pretty similar to what Hernandez was when he was drafted in the 16th round out of a California Juco.
